RIP New Orleans

Wow...

I don't even know where to start.

As they are shutting down gas stations all over M-town, I can't stop looking at pictures of what Katrina did to one of my favorite cities - and it saddens me... All that architecture... history... Gone.

What do you do when someone tells you that you can't go home for up to three months? What happens when your place of business is there? You can't work... where will you get money?

You just try to hold on to one another... reach out and help others... Do what you can.

A friend of the family has three groups of relatives staying with her right now and my mom and I are taking lunch over tomorrow for them. Where will the rest of these people go? You couldn't get a hotel room in M-town to save your life right now. The city is filled with refugees.

There's a picture on CNN of canal street... it just goes straight into the Mississippi river... And the looters! I just want to ask them, where are you taking this stuff that you are stealing??? Most of you don't even have a home anymore.

I almost agree with Bea...it's like Atlantis... I'm not sure it can or should be saved. By looking at those pictures - it seems like a near impossible task.

Sad... So many memories for me in that town (Bea, remember the three hurricanes in 30 mins?). Halloween and the balcony on Bourbon Street... the Mardi Gras float museum... the Garden District...

I'm so sad about this. Literally close to home. We have so many refugees (it is weird to say that about people who are just like us) filling our hotels and churches. Our gas stations are shutting down as well. Where to they go from here. The news is so, so sad.

If there's one thing we can always count on, it's change. The question at this point is not whether we will find a way to rebuild New Orleans, it's how. Americans always rebuild it's one of the things we are best at. I fear that the New Orleans that we share a love for might be gone forever but there will be a city that gets rebuilt in it's place and I hope that this beautiful city gets rebuilt in a way that is as unAmerican as the soul of that city is. I hope that the city is not given over to the deep pocketted industries that have been lying in wait for the day when large portions of New Orleans would be ripe for the picking and that where things need rebuilding they get done with the sensitivity required in the most unique city in the U.S.

And how can you forget the best damned psychic around- "hooray for you"!

How I equate New Orleans with my 20's...

I always wanted to go to NO and never made it. I developed a love of it from one of Anne Rice's books...the Witching Hour I think. I kind of agree...should it be saved? If it is, they need to fix what made it bad to begin with. But oh, those poor, poor people. It's so overwhelming to even think about. It's like...what do you do, where do you start?
